Why Was My Passport Photo Rejected? (Top 10 Reasons)

If your passport or visa photo was rejected by a government portal, you are not alone. According to immigration data, photo non-compliance is one of the top 3 reasons for application delays worldwide. Biometric scanners and facial recognition algorithms automatically flag photos that deviate even slightly from official ICAO 9303 standards.

1. Shadows on the Face or Background (Illumination Error)

This is the #1 reason for rejection. Government portals like CEAC frequently throw an "Illumination Error" if they detect uneven lighting. The background cannot have shadow outlines of your head, and your face must be evenly lit without harsh shadows under the nose or eyes.

2. Incorrect Background Color

While most people know they need a "white" background, they don't realize there are technical limits to the shade of white. The background must possess a uniform ΔE (color difference) of less than 5. Slight off-white walls, gray tints, or textured wallpaper will fail the automated scanner.

3. Incorrect Biometric Head Sizing

Cropping isn't just about cutting the image to 2x2 inches. Your face height must fall exactly between 50% to 69% of the overall image height (for US specs). If your head is too large or too small within the frame, the facial recognition software cannot properly map the distance between your eyes.

4. Low Resolution or Obvious AI Alterations

Photos must be at least 300 DPI (600 DPI preferred) and uncorrupted. Extremely compressed files (highly pixelated) will fail. Conversely, using generic AI filters that "beautify", smooth skin, or alter your physical features will be flagged as fraudulent alterations.

5. Glasses and Head Coverings

Glasses are now strictly prohibited in U.S. passport/visa photos. Even if your home country allows them, they often cause glare or obscure the eyebrows. Head coverings are only permitted for documented religious/medical reasons and must not cast a shadow over the face.
